Today's Edition
📰 Microsoft, OpenAI hit with new lawsuit by authors over AI training
OpenAI and Microsoft, its financial supporter, are facing a lawsuit filed in a Manhattan federal court on Friday. The lawsuit was brought by two nonfiction authors who claim that their work was improperly used to develop the AI models powering ChatGPT and other AI-based services.
The authors, Nicholas Basbanes and Nicholas Gage, have initiated a proposed class action lawsuit, alleging that their copyrights were violated when several of their books were used in the data set for training OpenAI's GPT large language model.
There has been no immediate response from representatives of Microsoft and OpenAI regarding the lawsuit.
This legal action is part of a growing trend, where both fiction and nonfiction writers, including comedian Sarah Silverman and "Game of Thrones" creator George R.R. Martin, have filed similar lawsuits against various technology companies. These lawsuits allege that the companies used the authors' works without permission to train their AI programs.
This follows the NYT lawsuit against OpenAI and Microsoft last week. The lawsuit alleges that these companies used a substantial number of the newspaper's articles without authorization to enhance the capabilities of their chatbots, which are designed to disseminate information to users.
Filed in Manhattan federal court, the complaint by The New York Times asserts that OpenAI and Microsoft are exploiting the newspaper's significant journalistic efforts for their benefit. The lawsuit claims these companies use The Times's content to develop alternative information delivery products, which could potentially divert audiences from the newspaper.
📰 Deloitte rolls out artificial intelligence chatbot to employees
Deloitte has introduced a generative AI chatbot, named "PairD," to 75,000 of its employees across Europe and the Middle East. This tool is designed to enhance productivity by assisting with tasks like creating PowerPoint presentations, composing emails, and writing code.
First implemented in the UK in October, PairD represents Deloitte's effort to integrate AI into professional services. Unlike its competitors, who often collaborate with established AI companies such as OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, Deloitte has developed PairD internally through its AI institute.
The tool's deployment is indicative of the growing trend in the professional services sector to use generative AI for automating various tasks. However, Deloitte has advised caution, noting that PairD may occasionally generate inaccurate information. As a result, users are encouraged to verify the chatbot's output for accuracy and completeness before using it for professional purposes.
Deloitte's "PairD" is versatile, capable of drafting emails, creating written content, coding for task automation, designing presentations, conducting research, and preparing meeting agendas.
Deloitte requires its employees to complete a specific training module to access PairD. Moreover, in a philanthropic gesture, Deloitte has announced that it will provide the UK disability charity Scope with complimentary access to the PairD tool.
