Microsoft making huge AI change

+ 80% of pediatric case studies misdiagnosed

Welcome back.

Today we reveal the biggest keyboard change from Microsoft in 30 years, and also how ChatGPT is incorrectly diagnosing more than 80% of pediatric case studies.

So let’s take a look at what’s featured in our fourth edition..

📰 Microsoft is adding an AI button to PC keyboards, their first major change in 30 years

Microsoft is intensifying its focus on AI by introducing a unique keyboard key specifically for its Windows Copilot. This marks the first significant update to the Windows PC keyboard in nearly three decades. The new Copilot key, aimed at enhancing user interaction with generative AI, will be featured on both laptops and desktop keyboards from Microsoft's OEM partners starting in February.

Yusuf Mehdi, Microsoft's Corporate Vice President and Consumer Chief Marketing Officer, explained that pressing this key will activate Copilot. This feature will enable users to search content online, access personal content, and utilize general PC features through its generative AI capabilities. The goal is for Copilot to act as an always-accessible smart assistant.

Microsoft has not yet revealed any specific partners for the launch of the Copilot key but anticipates announcements from companies about desktops and laptops with this feature soon. The functionality will also be showcased at CES 2024, beginning January 9.

This move, encouraging hardware partners to incorporate a Copilot key in their products, signals Microsoft's belief in the integral role of generative AI in the future of personal computing. The last addition of a new keyboard key by Microsoft was the Windows key in 1994.

Throughout 2023, Microsoft made several AI-related announcements, including the introduction of its Bing chatbot, Edge browser, and Copilot for Microsoft 365. CEO Satya Nadella has stated that AI advancements will significantly influence almost all aspects of the company's operations.

📰 ChatGPT incorrectly diagnosed more than 8 in 10 pediatric case studies, research finds

A recent study in JAMA Pediatrics revealed a high diagnostic error rate for the AI chatbot ChatGPT in pediatric cases. Using 100 case challenges from JAMA and the New England Journal of Medicine, researchers found that 83 percent of ChatGPT's diagnoses were incorrect, with 72 percent outright wrong and 11 percent too broad.

Despite this, the study sees potential in using large language models like ChatGPT in medicine, particularly as administrative tools. However, it noted ChatGPT's limitations, such as not being regularly updated with new medical information, and suggested more selective training for better accuracy.

Separately, a study highlighted the effectiveness of OpenAI's GPT-4 in diagnosing patients over 65, suggesting AI could enhance diagnostic confidence. This contrasts with the JAMA Pediatrics study, showcasing varied AI performance in different medical contexts.

The FDA has approved numerous AI-enabled medical devices, yet none using generative AI like ChatGPT so far. This cautious stance reflects the need for more robust evaluation and development of AI in medical diagnostics.
